> Sticky cabinet paint? Residue, uncured paint, or a finish that never hardens — how to tell, and how Parallel Painting assesses it. Call Tyler: (951) 551-0583.

Diagnosis First

Sticky cabinet paint most often comes down to three things: paint that hasn’t finished curing, a film of grease or cleaner residue on the surface, or a paint that stays soft enough for doors to grab the frames — painters call that blocking. Residue cleans off and curing takes time. A coating that never hardens has to come off.

## How to tell which one you have

**Check the surface first.** Once the finish is ready for cleaning, try a small hidden spot with the approved mild cleaner and a soft cloth. Rinse away cleaner residue and dry the spot. If the sticky film comes away and the paint below feels firm, surface buildup was contributing to the problem.

**Check the painting date and cure instructions.** Dry-to-touch means the surface is no longer wet; cured means the coating has hardened. A recently painted door can reach the first stage before the second. Follow the actual coating’s instructions for closing doors, putting items on shelves and cleaning.

**Check where the sticking happens.** A door that grabs the frame when it opens is showing blocking at a contact point. Look for paint transfer or peeling where the two surfaces meet. Also watch whether the door rubs mechanically; extra paint thickness and poor clearance can contribute to sticking.

Keep the paint label or invoice and take a photograph of the whole door plus the affected edge. Tell Tyler whether the problem started immediately, improved during curing or returned after cleaning. Leave already loose paint visible for inspection rather than pulling off a bigger sample.

## Still curing, or poor blocking resistance?

Paint can feel dry long before it has fully hardened, so some tackiness early on is normal. What isn’t normal is a finish that is still soft and grabby after the maker’s full cure time has passed. That points to the product or how it was applied — not to your patience.

Heat makes it worse. In a Coachella Valley kitchen, warm conditions can bring out blocking in a paint that wasn’t built for doors closing against frames all day. If your doors grab harder on hot days, tell Tyler — it’s one of the clearest clues about what went on your cabinets.

If clean paint is still soft past its cure time, another coat won’t save it. You’d be stacking new paint on a base that never set up. Heavy coats and poor curing conditions are known causes of undercured wood coatings, and the fix is to take the soft finish off, not bury it.

## Can it be saved?

Most of the time, yes — what matters is the cabinet underneath. Residue cleans off. Paint that’s still curing just needs time. Paint that stays soft or lets go gets fully removed to sound substrate and rebuilt the right way, which is the repair that actually holds.

Tyler looks at every door, drawer front, and box himself and tells you straight which case you’re in. If one door is too damaged to hold a finish, Tyler explains the condition and the limits of refinishing before work begins. If the kitchen can’t support a refinish, he tells you that too — before you commit to anything.

## How a full cabinet refinish works

A rescue takes the failed finish completely off, down to sound substrate. Before the cabinet boxes are sanded, the kitchen is sealed under negative-pressure containment, and every sander runs on a HEPA vacuum. Then comes bonding primer and 2K polyurethane — a two-part coating that hardens through a chemical reaction between its components instead of just air-drying. A fan draws air through a regular filter and vents outdoors to help control airborne dust, overspray, and fumes within the work area.

Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in Parallel Painting's shop booth; cabinet boxes are sprayed in your kitchen under containment. ## What the warranty covers here

Every full refinish Parallel Painting does comes with a 5-year written warranty. On a failing finish like this, that means the old paint comes fully off to sound substrate first — Parallel Painting assesses the existing coating and removes failing paint to a sound substrate before refinishing. Spot touch-ups are sometimes possible, but they don’t carry the 5-year warranty.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do painted cabinets feel sticky?

Unfinished curing, surface grease or cleaner residue, and poor blocking resistance are common causes. Check a hidden spot using the finish’s cleaning instructions, then check the coating’s cure requirements and the places where doors contact their frames.

### Will tacky cabinet paint eventually dry?

Yes, if it is still curing normally; grease or cleaner residue needs cleaning. Persistent sticking after cure calls for a check of the paint’s blocking resistance and the door clearance.

### Can I paint over sticky cabinets?

No, not while the surface is contaminated or the coating is unsound. A new coating needs a clean, dry, sound base. A failing coating is removed to sound substrate before the new finish is applied.
