Wood Types We Work With
Cedar
Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, but it still needs UV protection and moisture sealing in desert climates. We use semi-transparent or transparent stains that let the wood grain show through while blocking UV rays that cause graying.
Redwood
Redwood has beautiful natural color that fades quickly without protection. We apply penetrating oil-based stains that enhance the rich red tones and seal the wood against moisture and sun damage. Maintenance coats every two to three years keep redwood looking its best.
Pressure-Treated Pine
The most common deck material in our area. Pressure-treated lumber needs to dry for several weeks after installation before staining. We test moisture levels and apply the right product at the right time for maximum penetration and protection.
Composite Decking
Composite decks do not need traditional staining, but they can fade, stain, and develop mildew over time. We offer deep cleaning and specialized composite restoration coatings that bring back the original color and add a protective layer.
Our Deck Refinishing Process
Inspection
We check every board for rot, loose fasteners, popped nails, and structural issues. Problems get fixed before any stain goes on.
Cleaning
Power washing with deck-safe pressure and appropriate cleaners removes dirt, mildew, old flaking stain, and gray oxidation. We brighten the wood to open the grain for stain absorption.
Repairs
Cracked or split boards get replaced. Popped nails and screws are reset. Sanding smooths rough spots and splinters.
Stain Application
We apply professional-grade penetrating stain with the right method for your wood type — brush, roll, or spray-and-back-brush. Two coats on horizontal surfaces that take the most wear.
Sealing
A UV-blocking sealer locks in the stain and adds an additional layer of protection against sun, moisture, and foot traffic.
Deck Maintenance Tips for Southern California
- Reapply stain every 2-3 years in direct-sun areas. Shaded decks may go 3-4 years between coats.
- Sweep regularly to prevent dirt and debris from grinding into the finish.
- Move planters periodically to avoid moisture rings and trapped organic matter that promotes rot.
- Trim back vegetation that shades the deck and holds moisture — mildew thrives in damp shade.
- Address loose boards, popped nails, and small cracks promptly before they become bigger structural problems.
- If you notice the water bead test failing (water soaking in instead of beading up), it is time to re-seal.
