Keep Your Deck Beautiful and Protected

A deck is one of the most used — and most abused — surfaces on your property. Between foot traffic, furniture, grills, and the punishing Southern California sun, unprotected wood breaks down fast. Graying, splintering, cracking, and warping are all signs that your deck needs professional attention.

At Parallel Painting, Tyler handles deck staining and refinishing projects personally. We clean the surface properly, repair damaged wood, and apply professional-grade stains and sealers that penetrate deep and protect against UV damage, moisture, and everyday wear. Whether your deck is brand new and needs its first coat of protection or it is weathered and ready for a full restoration, we get it done right.

Wood Types We Work With

Cedar

Cedar is a popular decking wood, but it still benefits from regular sealing and stain protection in desert climates. We use semi-transparent or transparent stains that let the wood grain show through. Product selection depends on the substrate, existing condition, exposure, project scope, and current manufacturer instructions.

Redwood

Redwood has beautiful natural color that fades quickly without protection. We apply penetrating oil-based stains that enhance the rich red tones and seal the wood against moisture and sun damage. Periodic maintenance coats keep redwood looking its best — sun-exposed decks need them more often than shaded ones.

Pressure-Treated Pine

The most common deck material in our area. Pressure-treated lumber needs to dry for several weeks after installation before staining. We test moisture levels and apply the right product at the right time for maximum penetration and protection.

Composite Decking

Composite decks do not need traditional staining, but they can fade, stain, and develop mildew over time. We offer deep cleaning and specialized composite restoration coatings that bring back the original color and add a protective layer.

Our Deck Refinishing Process

1

Inspection

We check every board for rot, loose fasteners, popped nails, and structural issues. Problems get fixed before any stain goes on.

2

Cleaning

Power washing with deck-safe pressure and appropriate cleaners removes dirt, mildew, old flaking stain, and gray oxidation. We brighten the wood to open the grain for stain absorption.

3

Repairs

Cracked or split boards get replaced. Popped nails and screws are reset. Sanding smooths rough spots and splinters.

4

Stain Application

We apply professional-grade penetrating stain with the right method for your wood type — brush, roll, or spray-and-back-brush. Two coats on horizontal surfaces that take the most wear.

5

Sealing

A sealer locks in the stain and adds protection against sun, moisture, and foot traffic. Product selection depends on the substrate, existing condition, exposure, project scope, and current manufacturer instructions.

Deck Maintenance Tips for Southern California

  • Reapply stain periodically — direct-sun areas need it more often than shaded decks. The water-bead test tells you when it is time.
  • Sweep regularly to prevent dirt and debris from grinding into the finish.
  • Move planters periodically to avoid moisture rings and trapped organic matter that promotes rot.
  • Trim back vegetation that shades the deck and holds moisture — mildew thrives in damp shade.
  • Address loose boards, popped nails, and small cracks promptly before they become bigger structural problems.
  • If you notice the water bead test failing (water soaking in instead of beading up), it is time to re-seal.

Our Specialty: 2K Cabinet Refinishing

Beyond deck staining, we specialize in cabinet refinishing using two-component (2K) polyurethane. Cabinets are finished in our sealed negative-pressure containment. Every project is backed by a written warranty (ask for the current written terms) and Tyler on site for every job.
