When Cabinet Refinishing Is Not a Fit (We Walk Away Honest)

About 80% of kitchens qualify. The other 20% we turn down — and explain why. Straight talk on the conditions that disqualify a cabinet refinishing project.

CSLB #1015608 53+ 5-Star Reviews 5-Year Warranty

If your cabinets have substrate failure — delaminating particleboard, severe moisture rot, or loose prior coatings — refinishing will not stick, no matter how good the topcoat. Tyler Fowler is on every job to inspect before sanding starts. We turn down about 20% of kitchens, and we always explain why. A failed refinishing job on compromised substrate costs you twice. That is not a situation we put homeowners in.

Substrate Failure: Particleboard That Is Delaminating or Warped

Particleboard swells and crumbles under moisture or age. Common in base cabinets near sinks and dishwashers. If the box is soft when you press the interior panels, or you can see separation between layers, new finish cracks off fast regardless of coating quality. Italian 2K polyurethane bonds like factory coating — but only to a structurally sound surface. We poke, pull, and test the substrate before we ever bring out a sander.

Solid plywood boxes, hardwood face frames, and MDF door panels are excellent candidates for refinishing. These materials hold mechanical adhesion from HEPA-vacuumed sanding and accept the Italian 2K system properly. Swollen or crumbling particleboard does not — and there is no coating system that changes that fact.

Severe Moisture Damage: Active Water or Rot

Drips behind sinks, steam from stoves, dishwasher leaks — over years, these soak cabinet boxes at the base and backs. Refinishing seals the surface only — if moisture is still present or has compromised the structural integrity, it pushes through any finish from behind. Tyler Fowler is on every job to check for this before sanding starts. CSLB #1015608 since 2016 means we have seen what moisture damage looks like in every stage, from barely visible to obvious.

Signs to check before calling us: press the interior base panels near the sink. If they flex or feel soft, moisture is involved. Check inside the cabinet directly under the sink — dark staining or softness is a disqualifier. A musty smell from inside closed cabinets often means trapped moisture that has been present for a long time.

Loose Prior Coatings: Peeling Veneer or Paint

Old laminate that is bubbling, paint that peels when you press and release a corner, or veneer lifting at door edges — these indicate that adhesion has already failed at the substrate level. HEPA-vacuumed sanding levels surfaces that are in good condition and creates the mechanical bond Italian 2K polyurethane needs. But if the substrate beneath the existing coating is already failing, the new finish will follow the same path within months.

In some cases, if the peeling is limited to a specific area and the underlying substrate is sound, we can strip back to bare wood and refinish. Tyler evaluates this on a case-by-case basis. When peeling is widespread or the substrate is compromised, we disqualify rather than provide a temporary cover-up.

Repairs Needed by Others: Not Our Call

Warped door boxes that need cabinet joinery, rotted structural members, or damaged frames that require a cabinet maker to rebuild sections before any finishing work can happen. We refinish finished surfaces under sealed negative-pressure containment — we do not do cabinet construction. If structural repairs need to happen first, we pass until they are complete. This saves you from paying for refinishing that cannot last on damaged structure.

Why We Disqualify — And What Happens When It Does Fit

We turn down about 20% of kitchens. Not because we are picky — because a failed refinishing job on bad substrate is worse than no job at all. It costs you the refinishing investment plus whatever comes next. That is a bad outcome for everyone involved, and it is not something we put homeowners in.

When your cabinets are solid — good plywood boxes, sound face frames, MDF or hardwood doors with no active moisture or adhesion failure — we deliver Italian 2K polyurethane with a 5-year written warranty, Tyler Fowler personally on every job from inspection through walkthrough, HEPA-vacuumed sanding for maximum adhesion, and sealed negative-pressure containment for a clean, professional finish. That package is worth protecting, which is why we only offer it on kitchens where it can hold up.

Disqualifier Questions — Answered Straight

What substrate failures disqualify my cabinets from refinishing?

Delaminating particleboard, warped or swollen cabinet boxes from moisture, and severely deteriorated substrate that is soft or crumbling when pressed. Italian 2K polyurethane bonds like factory coating — but only to sound substrate. If the underlying material is compromised, no topcoat system holds long-term. Tyler inspects every cabinet box before quoting to determine whether the substrate qualifies.

How does severe moisture damage affect refinishing success?

Active moisture or residual moisture trapped in cabinet boxes causes any finish to fail, regardless of coating quality. Steam from cooking over years, drips behind sinks, or dishwasher leaks soak cabinet boxes at the base and sides. If cabinets feel soft, smell musty, or show swelling at the base, refinishing is not a fit. Tyler Fowler is on every job to check for this before sanding starts — CSLB #1015608 since 2016 means we have seen what moisture damage looks like in every stage.

When do loose prior coatings mean we cannot proceed?

When laminate is bubbling, paint is actively peeling when you press and release, or veneer is lifting at the edges, the adhesion failure is in the substrate — not just the surface. HEPA-vacuumed sanding levels good surfaces and creates the mechanical bond the 2K needs. But if the substrate beneath the old coating is already failing, fresh finish will follow the same path. We disqualify rather than apply a temporary cover-up.

What repairs by others make refinishing a no-fit?

Warped door boxes that need cabinet joinery work, rotted structural members, or frame damage that requires a cabinet maker to rebuild sections. We refinish finished surfaces — we do not rebuild cabinet structure. If structural repairs are needed first, we pass until those are done. This protects you from paying for refinishing work that cannot last on compromised structure.

Why turn down work when most jobs qualify — what is your edge when it fits?

About 80% of kitchens we inspect qualify. We turn down the other 20% because a failed refinishing job on bad substrate is worse than no job at all — it costs you twice. When your cabinets are solid, we deliver Italian 2K polyurethane with a 5-year written warranty, Tyler Fowler on every job, HEPA-vacuumed sanding for adhesion, and sealed negative-pressure containment for a clean finish. That package is worth protecting — which means we only offer it on kitchens where it can actually hold up.
