Why Are My Painted Cabinets Turning Yellow?
Yellowing on white painted cabinets most often comes from a film of kitchen grease and residue on the surface, or an oil-based or alkyd paint yellowing within the paint itself, which happens faster in areas with little natural light. Heat and aging of the finish also contribute. Clean a hidden spot with a finish-approved mild cleaner: if the white comes back, it was residue; if it does not, check the coating, because yellowing within oil or alkyd paint will not wash off.

How to tell which one you have
Start with a hidden wipe test. Once your finish is ready for cleaning, use a soft cloth and its approved mild cleaner. Rinse gently, dry the spot and compare it with the area beside it in the same light. Skip abrasive pads and hard scrubbing.
If the white comes back: surface buildup was changing the color you saw. Kitchen grease and oil need appropriate cleaning. If the paint underneath is firm and intact, start with cleaning.
If the yellow stays: the coating itself needs checking. Oil and alkyd paint can yellow internally, and oil-based clear varnish can darken with age. Tyler looks at what’s on your cabinets before recommending a repaint.

Why oil and alkyd paint yellows
White and pale oil-based alkyd paints tend to yellow as they age because of the way they cure. Poor light makes it more noticeable, including inside cupboards and behind appliances. That color change is inside the coating, so it won’t wash away.
Near your stove, grease and heat are both clues. Inside a shaded cupboard, oil or alkyd paint is worth checking. Tyler uses the location, the cleaning result and the coating itself to work out the next step.
Stick with the finish’s approved cleaner. Some household cleaners can speed up yellowing in alkyd paint. If a gentle clean leaves the yellow behind, put down the scrubber and let Tyler look at the finish.
Can it be saved?
Yes. Surface residue often cleans off, and sound yellowed paint can be prepared for a new color. A yellow finish can still be firmly bonded. It needs cleaning, drying and the right prep before repainting.
If your cabinets are also peeling, chipping broadly or staying soft past their cure time, the failing paint comes fully off to sound substrate. We never hide a weak layer under a fresh white topcoat.

What we do on a full refinish
A rescue starts by taking the failed finish completely off, down to sound substrate. Sanding is HEPA-vacuumed, and your kitchen is sealed under negative-pressure containment. Then comes bonding primer and Italian 2K polyurethane — a two-part coating that hardens through a chemical reaction between its components.

What the warranty covers here
Every full refinish we do comes with a 5-year written warranty. On a failing finish, that means the old paint comes fully off to sound substrate first — we never topcoat over someone else’s failing paint. Spot touch-ups are sometimes possible, but they don’t carry the 5-year warranty. Tyler explains which repair your cabinets need before you commit.
